What Is SEO?

In the world of technology in which we live, it is common for brand new Three Letter Acronyms, also ironically known as “TLAs”, to appear every day.  With that being the case, it is increasingly difficult to keep up with all of these new concepts and more importantly, to know which ones you should invest your time learning.  Admittedly, tech language is often confusing and only gets more complicated when we remove the actual words from the phrases that we use. This brings us to “SEO,” which is an acronym that is quite important to us at the Apollo Media Team, as it should be for all businesses looking for an online presence that will increase their brand awareness and market impact.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which doesn’t really help too much in explaining exactly what it is. So let’s break it down:

What is a search engine?

Simply put, a search engine is any service like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask, etc. that allows you to search for something and receive in return results matching what you searched.

Optimization?

You may notice that when you type words into Google that you get back more than one result. Often millions of results are returned. Google decides which results to place at the top and which ones to place further down. In order to do this, Google considers many factors such as keywords (“BBQ”, “Restaurant”, “Buffet”, etc.) that are common terms people use while searching.  The collective of all the factors that search engines consider creates your page ranking. Naturally, the higher your page ranking is, the higher your website will appear in the search results. You want your business to appear near the top in order to attract as many customers to your website as possible. In fact, research has shown that 95% of traffic goes to websites on the first page. Making it to the front is critical for business growth and is why we highly recommend the SEO package to our clients here at the Apollo Media Team.

How do I increase my page ranking?

Unfortunately, there is no clean answer for this because websites like Google change their prioritization methodology frequently. Some of the safe and consistent things you can do are:

  • Have plenty of relevant keywords on your website’s home page,
  • Regularly update your website,
  • Post comments that contain links to your website on other websites such as Facebook.

The goal is ultimately to have a steady flow of traffic going to your website so that you can get a progressively higher position in the search results.
